My Red hair update

I've had my hair bright red since July of last year, and I really, really love it! I'm still using the same products to achieve my color, except that I no longer pre-lighten my hair, I just use a 40 volume developer with L'Oreal hicolor highlights dye in magenta. I also use the Quantum dye depositing shampoo, in red (I buy it at sally's) to help maintain my color and to refresh it, I use Manic Panic's dye in Vampire Red. So I really don't have to dye my hair with the permanent dye any more than once every 4-5 weeks. which is how often I would dye it when I had it Jet black anyway. Here are some photos of how my hair looks now...

  1. How do you apply the manic panic? Do you do it every 2 weeks? I'm going to use the L'oreal Hicolor in Magenta and am trying to get everything i need. Also, does it fade quickly?

    Your hair looks amazing!!

    1. yes, mid month, I just wash my hair and apply the manic panic...this makes it last much longer....It will only fade quickly if you wash your hair every day =)
      Thank you!

  2. Great! My order from Sallys is on the way! I cam so excited to have bright red hair. Thanks for your help!! You look amazing :-)

One more question..When doing touchups, do you just apply the Loreal Magenta to your roots or do you apply to your whole head again?

    thanks again!

    1. when I do touch-ups, I will use the hicolor with 40 volume on my roots and not touch my ends, because it will start to damage the rest of the hair...for the rest of the hair I just apply the Manic Panic. =)

You are very welcome! enjoy your red hair!

  3. I admit, I have not been on this webpage in a long time... however it was another joy to see It is such an important topic and ignored by so many, even professionals. I thank you to help making people more aware of possible issues. Great stuff as usual...

  4. You look great. Should I use 40 vol dev. Because my hair came out an ugly deep magenta and my middle and ends are blackish... I had my hair a beautiful vibrant magenta also dyed with hicolor hilights magenta, until my husband made me dye it black and now I'm trying to get it back to magenta... U look gorgeous by the way.

    1. Thank you!! You can try using the 40 volume developer but I don't know if it'll lift the black ends.
I recently dyed the bottom of my hair which was dyed JET BLACK, a dark blood red....I simply bleached the hair with a 40 volume developer and got it to a brassy color, then dyed it.
Maybe that would help on your ends...but you would have to be very careful since the ends of the hair are the most fragile.

  5. Loreal hicolor is awesome, isn't it? It's a saviour for not having to bleach and works great as long as you don't have completely black hair. And if you do, use the hi color and use it again in a couple of weeks to gradually lighten.

  6. Hi!! So I have been using Loreal Hicolor Highlights RED for the past year, and have been wanting to start using Manic Panic. I have a couple questions before I use the product though. Would you happen to know if I can/or should touch up my roots with my regular developer and Hicolor RED, and then apply all over the Vampire Red Manic Panic? ALSO, I have extremely looong hair and don't want my ends to be fried. Is there any bleach chemicals in Manic Panic that would fry my ends/all over hair?

    Thank you! -Sammi
